At Sinai and Sons, we understand the intrigue of the slightly strange, the unusual and the downright outlandish. For this year’s Masterpiece Fair in London (25 June–1 July) we bring together art and antiques that will surprise, delight and even shock you. Fantastique celebrates beauty in unusual places, rejoices in feats of artistic imagination, and embraces the dark side.
Nature perceived by the artist’s eye can become what we call Hypernature: see the wonders of Gallé’s glass where the transmission of light adds another dimension to natural subjects, or the expression of idealised nature on Royal Worcester porcelain or Japanese okimono. Tiffany turns nature to surreal purpose in a gaping silver frog, pressed into service as a creamer. And in the hands of masters of art nouveau like Majorelle and Dunand, nature takes on a dreamlike quality. Fantastique embraces the grotesque hilarity of Martinware, and also takes us into the dark side, where devils dance amidst harbingers of death.
As befits our unworldly theme, we have added an extra dimension to Fantastique. Through the artistry of Sharon Pinsker and Martyn Pick we bring our exhibits to life, creating movement out of stasis through animation. We hope this original enterprise delights you as much as it does us, and we invite you to bewitch your eyes at Sinai and Sons
